Carmel River State Beach was my destination on my day off. Just such a beautiful beach round the headland from Point Lobos, and much quieter than Carmel State Beach.
During the day I saw pelicans, dolphins, sea otters, harbour seals and more right from the beach. It made the end of this part of my Churchill fellowship particularly special and gave me time to reflect on what I’ve learnt.
Tomorrow, it's off to Santa Barbara to investigate the Channel Islands in Week 2.
A quick pitstop in San Luis Obispo. Coffee and a good book makes for a pleasurable lunch. Lovely little town.
A five mile walk to get to know Santa Barbara, where I’ll be based for week 2. The blast of the horns told me the Pacific Surfliner was coming through.
I’ve got a secret plan to take this train somewhere to see some MPAs - watch this space…
Santa Barbara’s sights, shores and sea views. This is my kind of place.
Leon Bridges at the Santa Barbara Bowl, open air venue high up with the sea in the distance. Not bad for an evening.
Laguna, O.C. A life motto I think we can all support
A bunch of highly protected coastal reserves in direct contact with some of the most developed coastline in California.
Had an awesome train journey and visit, topped off with some great wine. Check out the latest blog post !
A decent catch of (dive-caught) red sea urchin, bound no doubt for the high end restaurants around Santa Barbara. Sign of a healthy ocean?
